Why You’ll Love This Protein Shake
- Quick and easy – Just throw a handful of ingredients into your blender and you’ve got a delicious shake to sip for breakfast or post-workout.
- Protein Packed – This shake has 24 grams of protein and less than 300 calories!
- Tastes like a chocolate milkshake – the consistency and rich, chocolatey flavor will make you feel like you’re drinking a chocolate milkshake, especially if you add a little whipped cream on top.
Ingredients Needed:
- banana โ I recommend using a frozen banana because it will give you that thick and creamy shake texture.
- chocolate protein powder โ Since this is a chocolate protein shake, I like using chocolate protein powder. In terms of which protein powder to use, I love use Nuzest protein powder. Use my code eatingbirdfood for 15% off your order.
- cocoa powder โ for more chocolate flavor. Cacao powder also works.
- milk โ I like using an unsweetened vanilla almond milk for this protein shake, but any milk will work.
- chia seeds or flaxseed โ totally optional, but does add a little extra protein, fiber and healthy fats.
- peanut butter – optional, but makes this shake taste amazing and adds a bit more protein.
- whipped cream โ optional
How to Make a Chocolate Protein Shake Taste Better?
If you’re used to having a protein shake that’s just chocolate protein powder mixed with water, the blended protein shake recipe I’m sharing here is already going to taste much better!
I think the frozen banana really helps make the texture more appealing (and add a little sweetness) and the added cocoa powder gives it more chocolate flavor. That said, here are some tips for making a chocolate protein shake taste better:
- pick a good protein powder: to be perfectly honest, some protein powders taste better than others. Many have a chalky texture or weird aftertaste. Find a protein powder that actually tastes good and your shakes will automatically taste better. I’m a big fan of Nuzest.
- use milk: using milk instead of water will make your protein shake more creamy and make it taste more like an actual milkshake.
- add peanut butter: I personally loving adding a scoop of peanut butter to my protein shakes. It adds more protein and the combo of chocolate and peanut butter is my fave. It reminds me of peanut butter cups!
- add mint: love mint chocolate chip? Try adding 1-2 drops of peppermint extract or 4-5 fresh mint leaves to this shake. Or try my mint chocolate chip smoothie.

Amazing Chocolate Protein Shake
Ingredients
- 1 scoop (25 grams) chocolate protein powder
- 1 frozen banana, in chunks
- ยฝ Tablespoon cocoa powder
- ยพ cup milk (I used almond milk)
- 1 Tablespoon peanut butter, optional*
- ยฝ Tablespoon chia seeds or ground flaxseed, optional*
- handful of ice
- whipped cream, optional
Instructions
- Add all ingredients into your blender except the whipped cream and blend until smooth.
- Pour into a glass, add a little whipped cream on top, if desired and enjoy.
Notes
- If you want to lower the sugar content, use less banana. I often do 1/2 of a banana instead of the whole banana. It’s not as creamy, but still good!
- Peanut butter is optional (and not included in the nutrition facts), but if you’re like me and love chocolate peanut butter flavor you can add it in. You can also use peanut butter powder for less calories and fat.ย
- Chia seeds or flaxseeds are also optional and not included in the nutrition facts.ย

Tastes just like a chocolate milkshake. All my teeth are sweet, so this is absolutely brilliant!
YAY! I am so glad you are loving this chocolate protein shake, Ben! It is one of my faves too. Thank you for sharing your review & star rating, I really appreciate it!
Iโm curious to try this but Iโm a little hesitant because of the banana. Does it just add sweetness, or can you actually taste the banana in the shake? ๐
Hi Marie – It definitely adds sweetness, but depending on how sensitive you are to the flavor of banana you could use frozen cauliflower or zucchini (they don’t add flavor) and then add some sweetener of your preference OR some dates. Hope that helps!
Really enjoyed this. Whey protein has been making me sick so this is my first shake with the vegan Orgain protein powder in chocolate (was available locally). We used flax instead of chia, and I swapped half of the almond milk for coffee for my husbandโs shake.
Iโm looking forward to trying mint when mine comes in and the chia seeds because I like the crunch sometimes. Thanks!

Pretty good. I used 20g Vega protein powder instead of a 25g. Iโm fairly picky with trying things but I tried this and it was fairly good. But after eating it, It leaves an after taste kind of but itโs what happens itโs pretty good.
