This 3-ingredient berry kefir smoothie is packed with gut-healthy probiotics and ready in just 5 minutes. It’s the perfect refreshing drink for breakfast or a mid-day snack.

With the weather warming up I’ve been on such a smoothie kick! Whenever I make a smoothie I try to add some form of protein to the recipe, whether it be protein powder, nut butter, greek yogurt or my newest obsession… kefir!

Adding kefir to smoothies not only adds protein, but also probiotics, which are great for a healthy gut!

Why You’ll Love This Smoothie

  • Quick and easy – With only 3 main ingredients and a blender this smoothie comes together in a matter of minutes!
  • Versatile – This smoothie would make for a great snack or addition to breakfast paired alongside these baked egg muffins or dairy-free spinach quiche.
  • Nutrient-packed – With the combo of frozen berries, banana and kefir this smoothie is bursting with protein, probiotics, vitamins and antioxidants.

Ingredients Needed

Ingredients measured out to make Kefir Smoothie: frozen mixed berries, frozen banana and organic full fat plain kefir.
  • organic full-fat plain kefir – kefir adds a creamy texture and tangy flavor to the smoothie, while also providing probiotics and protein. My go-to kefir is the Lifeway Plain Organic Probiotic Whole Milk Kefir Drink.
  • frozen mixed berries – these berries add sweetness, vibrant color and a boost of antioxidants to the smoothie. You can use just one type of frozen berry or a combination of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries.
  • frozen banana – adds creaminess and natural sweetness. You can follow my guide on how to freeze bananas for smoothies.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Kefir: I used plain organic full fat kefir, but feel free to use your favorite flavor for this smoothie.
  • Fruit: If you don’t have frozen mixed berries or a banana on hand feel free to use whatever frozen fruit you have!
  • Add more protein: To make this smoothie more filling you can add a scoop of your favorite protein powder or nut butter before blending.
  • Add greens: Boost the nutrition content of your smoothie with some greens like spinach or kale.

How to Make Kefir Smoothie

The great thing about this recipe is how easy it is to make!

Brittany’s Tips!

  • Adjust consistency as needed: If your smoothie is too thick, add a splash of milk or water. If it’s too thin add some more frozen berries or ice.
  • Use frozen fruit: Frozen fruits not only keep the smoothie cold but also add to its creamy texture so I recommend always using frozen fruit when it comes to smoothies. Frozen bananas, in particular, are great for a smooth, creamy consistency.
  • Use a high-powdered blender: For the best results and smoothest texture I suggest using a high-powdered blender. I love my Vitamix for making smoothies!
  • Leftover kefir: If you have leftover kefir after making this smoothie, try my kefir overnight oats too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is kefir?

Kefir is an ancient healing superfood from the Caucasus Mountains that has provided microbiome support for over 2,000 years. It’s a tart and tangy cultured milk smoothie that’s packed with probiotics, protein, calcium, and vitamin D.

What are the health benefits of kefir?

Kefir is a nutritional powerhouse and has a ton of health benefits! It’s loaded with beneficial probiotics, those friendly bacteria that do wonders for your gut health. By promoting a diverse and balanced gut microbiome, kefir can help improve digestion, boost immunity, and even enhance mood. It’s also packed with essential vitamins and minerals like calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and B vitamins. These nutrients play key roles in bone health, energy production, and overall well-being. What type of kefir is best to use?

I used plain whole milk kefir to really let the berry and banana flavor shine through, but you can definitely use any flavor of kefir. I bet strawberry or blueberry would be delicious and add some good berry flavor!
