Learn how to make almond butter at home with this simple recipe. All you need is one ingredient and a food processor or high powered blender. Itโs creamy, smooth and delicious added to toast, oatmeal, smoothies or just eaten by the spoonful!
How have I not shared a classic almond butter recipe yet?! I’ve shared different flavored nut butters but never traditional almond butter. If you’ve never made homemade almond butter, you’re in for a treat.

Why You Need to Make This Recipe
- It’s so easy to make your own almond butter at home and tastes so much better than store-bought!
- You just need one ingredient and a food processor or high powered blender.
- It can be customized to your liking and enjoyed in a variety of ways!
Ingredients Needed
- raw almonds โ I recommend using raw almonds for the best flavor. You will roast them before grinding into nut butter but I think the flavor is better when you roast your own vs. store-bought roasted almonds!
- oil โ if needed, you can add in a little neutral oil (like avocado or coconut oil oil) to make the almond butter extra smooth. This is optional!
How to Make Almond Butter
The first step is toasting your almonds in the oven. I don’t recommend using store-bought roasted almonds because the flavor will be a little off. Spread the raw almonds on a baking sheet and bake at 350ยบF for 8-10 minutes. Let them cool until the almonds are at room temperature.
Once the almonds have cooled, place the almonds in a food processor fitted with the S blade and process until the almonds turn into almond butter. This does take some time so be patient! The almonds will be ground to a fine powder first and then turn into a ball and finally will be smooth almond butter. Make sure you are scraping down the sides occasionally so everything gets mixed evenly. If you have processed for 20 minutes and the almonds still haven’t turned into almond butter, I recommend adding 1 teaspoon of oil at a time until the mixture starts to smooth out.
tip! Be patient! Processing the almonds could take 15-25 minutes so be patient and keep processing! Trust the process!
Variations
Once you’ve mastered this base recipe, the variations are endless! Here are some flavor ideas:
- maple syrup or honey โ add a little sweetness to your almond butter with maple syrup or honey.
- cinnamon โ a little goes a long way! Mix in 1 teaspoon of cinnamon for a flavor upgrade.
- vanilla โ fresh vanilla bean seeds or vanilla extract is a great addition.
- coconut โ use coconut oil or add some shredded coconut in for added texture and flavor.
- chocolate โ mix in cocoa powder or cacao powder for a chocolate twist!
Can I Make Almond Butter in a Blender?
Yes! You can make almond butter in a high powdered blender like a Vitamix. I find that the process is much faster in a blender. You will need to blend the full 4 cups of almonds in order for the nuts to process properly. I usually add a little oil to help it smooth out as well.
How to Use Almond Butter
There are so many ways to use almond butter! Here are some ideas:
- Spread on toast or an english muffin. I love topping my homemade sourdough with almond butter and a drizzle of honey.
- Mix into a smoothie. Mix homemade almond butter into any recipe that calls for nut or seed butter.
- Make upgraded peanut butter cups. Swap the peanut butter in this simple peanut butter cup recipe!
- Mix into brownies or cookies. Use almond butter in place of peanut butter in these oatmeal cookies for the ultimate treat.
- Mix into overnight oats or traditional oatmeal.
- Drizzle over yogurt or make my whipped yogurt bowl with almond butter in place of peanut butter!
- Make a sauce or dressing. I’m obsessed with this crunchy asian chopped salad which is tossed in a delicious chili almond dressing.
How to Store Leftovers
Store your almond butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. I like using mason jars or Weck jars.
